Happy Day Canna is proud to be a part of the rapidly expanding cannabis industry in the Great Lakes State. With that in mind, here are answers to a few common questions about marijuana laws and regulations in Michigan.
When Was Cannabis Legalized in Michigan?
Recreational cannabis for adult use was legalized via Prop. 1, a voter initiative that passed in 2018, with 55% of voters approving. Retail sales began on Dec. 1, 2019.
Can I Use a Credit or Debit Card to Buy Cannabis in Michigan?
Generally, no. Since cannabis remains federally illegal, most major banking institutions cannot service cannabis transactions in states that have legalized it.
Debit card transactions with PINs were possible until 2023 when Mastercard became aware of this workaround and ended it.
Happy Day Canna, however, accepts credit cards and Visa debit cards.
How Much Can I Buy At One Time?
Individuals over 21 can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and up to 15 grams of concentrates per transaction.
How Much Can I Have in My Possession?
Individuals can keep up to 10 ounces of cannabis at home, stored in a secure location.
Can I Bring Cannabis From Michigan Back to My Home State?
No. Traveling across state lines with cannabis purchased in Michigan—even to another state where it is legal—violates state and federal law.
Can I Use or Bring Cannabis to National Forests or any Federal Property in Michigan?
No. Cannabis possession and use remains illegal under federal law and is therefore prohibited on federal lands within the state of Michigan. This includes all three of Michigan’s national forests, federal buildings, and other public properties. Penalties can include fines up to $1,000 and up to one year of prison time.
Can I Smoke Weed in Public in Michigan?
No. Public smoking or other consumption of cannabis is not permitted in Michigan. The penalty for public consumption is a $100 fine, no matter how many times you are caught.
Can I Grow My Own Cannabis in Michigan?
Yes. In Michigan, you can cultivate up to 12 cannabis plants in your home if you’re over 21 years old. Cultivation must be for personal use only—there is no penalty for giving away or gifting home-grown cannabis. Indoor growing is encouraged over outdoor growing, as the plants cannot be visible from any public space.
Additionally, it’s important to note that growing your own cannabis can be incredibly challenging—please support local dispensaries like Happy Day Canna that work hard to cultivate and provide high-quality strains and cannabis products.
